Researchers have yet to determine whether this newly discovered species exhibits similar bioluminescent properties. Siphonophores, on the other hand, appear at first glance like elongated jellyfish or glowing ribbons suspended in the water. They are not single organisms but colonies composed of genetically identical individuals called zooids. Each zooid performs a specific function—some capture food, others digest it, some enable movement, and others handle reproduction. Together, they operate as a single entity, much like a superorganism. Unlike ants, which remain separate individuals within their colony, the zooids of a siphonophore are parts of a unified whole and cannot survive independently. This level of specialization and integration makes them even more intriguing and seemingly extraterrestrial in nature. Perhaps the most striking discovery was a young glass squid, captured by the underwater robot SuBastian at a depth of 779 meters. The squid's transparency is an adaptation perfectly suited to its environment, where there are no natural shelters such as rocks, trees, burrows, or seabeds to hide behind. In the open ocean, being nearly invisible provides a crucial survival advantage against predators. The image of this delicate creature highlights the extreme adaptations found in the deep sea, where life thrives under conditions that seem almost alien. These findings underscore the vast amount of undiscovered life in Earth’s oceans, particularly in the mesopelagic zone, which remains relatively unexplored compared to other regions of the planet.
