Kuuluisa kodinkonekauppias on kuollut

Veikko Pakarinen, 96-vuotinen kodinkonekauppias, kuoli Helsingissä 15. huhtikuuta. Hänen kuolemansa ilmennettiin Helsingin Sanomien julkaisemaan muistokirjoituksessa, jossa kerrottiin, että hän kuoli lyhyen sairauden uuvuttamana. Pakarinen perusti kodinkoneliikenne Veikon Kone vuonna 1962, ja yritys kasvoi Suomen suurimmaksi kodinkoneketjueksi. Yritys myydettiin 1990-luvulla hänen perheensä jäsenille ja liittyi myöhemmin TeliaSonera-konserniin. Veikon Kone -nimi palautettiin käyttöön 2014, ja nykyisin Suomessa on lähes 50 myymälää.

A renowned home appliance retailer has passed away. Veikko Pakarinen, who founded the well-known chain Veikon Kone, died at the age of 96 in Helsinki on April 15. His death was announced in a tribute published in Helsingin Sanomat. According to the tribute, Pakarinen succumbed to complications arising from a brief illness. He had been born in Enon in 1930 and spent much of his life building and expanding his business empire in Finland.

Pakarinen's journey into retail began in 1962 when he started selling televisions using newspaper advertisements as a means of reaching potential customers. At the time, orders were taken over the phone, after which the televisions were delivered directly to the customer’s homes. This innovative approach laid the foundation for what would become one of Finland’s largest chains of home appliance stores. Over the decades, Veikon Kone grew significantly, becoming a household name across the country.

In the 1980s, Pakarinen stepped back from day-to-day operations, passing the management of the company to his two sons and a daughter. The company continued its growth trajectory until 1999, when Veikon Kone was sold to the telecommunications operator Loimaan Seudun Puhelin Oy. In 2006, the company became part of the TeliaSonera corporate group. However, despite these changes in ownership, the brand eventually faced challenges that led to its decline.

By 2012, Veikon Kone ceased operations due to financial difficulties. At that time, five of the company’s stores were acquired by Expert ASA Oy. The brand name was later revived in 2014 as part of the Expert Finland home technology chain. Today, there are nearly 50 Veikon Kone stores operating throughout Finland, indicating that the legacy of the original chain continues in some form.

Pakarinen’s influence extended beyond just the physical stores. His early methods of advertising and delivery helped shape consumer behavior in Finland during a period of rapid technological change. As television and other home appliances became more common, Veikon Kone played a crucial role in making them accessible to households across the country. Even though the company went through several transitions in ownership and structure, its impact on Finnish retail remained significant.

The tribute in Helsingin Sanomat highlighted Pakarinen’s long career and the respect he commanded within the industry. It noted that he had built a successful enterprise from scratch and had left behind a lasting legacy in the field of home appliance retailing. His family members expressed their grief and paid homage to his contributions to both the business world and the community.

As news of his passing spread, colleagues and former employees remembered Pakarinen as a visionary leader who had adapted to changing market conditions while maintaining a strong connection with customers. Some reflected on how his initial idea of delivering products directly to consumers had set a precedent that influenced many others in the sector.

Looking ahead, the future of the Veikon Kone brand remains tied to its current operators under the Expert Finland umbrella. While the original founder has passed away, the name continues to represent a network of stores that serve Finnish consumers. Whether this revival will lead to further expansion or face new challenges remains uncertain, but the history of Veikon Kone stands as a testament to Pakarinen’s entrepreneurial spirit and the enduring nature of his business model.
