Korea's industrial output posts biggest gain in 6 years on autos, chips

South Korea's industrial output saw its largest increase in six years in June, driven primarily by a strong rebound in automobile production and semiconductor output. The Ministry of Data and Statistics reported that production, retail sales, and facility investment all rose for the first time in three months, with the seasonally adjusted all-industry production index increasing by 2.3% to 120.1. Automobile production surged 15.4%, fueled by normalized parts supplies after a March fire and heightened demand for hybrid and SUV models. Semiconductor production also recovered, rising 4.5% as demand for memory and non-memory chips grew. The uptick in auto and chip sectors boosted mining and manufacturing output by 6.4%. Retail sales increased 2.7%, with durable goods seeing their highest growth since 2009. Facility investment rose due to increased spending on machinery and transportation equipment. While services and construction showed modest gains, overall construction activity remained weak.
