Despite these challenges, the team used modern sonar technology to map the seabed and identified two areas with hard substrates stretching over seven kilometers. The real surprise came when remotely operated cameras and drones captured footage of a thriving coral reef. Zinzindohoué recalled the moment of discovery, describing feelings of excitement and disbelief. “We still remember those first images,” he said. “After thinking so much about this reef, we suddenly saw something real before us.” The reef primarily consists of soft corals resembling sea fans. Scientists documented at least six different types of these corals, along with two species of black corals, known for their longevity and complex habitats. Eight species of fish were also recorded feeding and sheltering among the corals, including the golden African tuna, soldierfish, Guinea grunt, and butterflyfish. Zinzindohoué emphasized that this discovery might not be unique. “It speaks more to how little we know about the coastal regions of West Africa and beyond,” he said. “If we managed to find this reef again after 60 years, how many others remain undocumented or simply forgotten?” Benin, known for its historical ties to the Voodoo religion, has largely remained unexplored in terms of its marine environments. This finding adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that much of the world’s oceans remain poorly understood, particularly in regions with limited scientific investment. The study was conducted by a multidisciplinary team of researchers who combined sonar mapping with direct observation using submersible cameras and drones. Their findings challenge previous assumptions about the state of deep-sea ecosystems in the region and open new avenues for marine conservation efforts.
