Korajlic on the femicide in Gracanica: This is not a family tragedy, but the most severe form of violence against women

A tragic incident involving domestic violence has once again brought attention to the issue of femicide in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In the village of Miričina near Gračanica, a man shot his wife with a hunting rifle before taking his own life. The incident occurred in the courtyard of their family home in the area known as Miričina Polje. According to official reports from the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Tuzla Canton, the man was identified as S.K., born in 1958, while his wife, N.K., also born in 1958, was found dead without signs of life. The man was taken to a medical facility via ambulance but later died en route.

The police were alerted around 7:40 PM local time on June 21, 2026, after receiving a call about the use of firearms and injured individuals in the area. Officers from the Police Station in Gračanica, along with members of the Criminal Investigation Department and emergency services, responded promptly to the scene. Upon arrival, they confirmed the woman's death and transported the injured man to a healthcare facility. However, he succumbed to his injuries during transit. The cantonal prosecutor has been informed and will oversee the investigation, which will be conducted by investigators from the Criminal Police Sector under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Tuzla Canton.

This case has reignited discussions surrounding domestic violence, its causes, and prevention strategies. It has also prompted experts to emphasize the gravity of such incidents and the need for systemic interventions. Professor Dr. Nedžad Korajlić, an expert in security and criminology, highlighted the alarming nature of this event, noting that femicides often occur within private spaces among individuals who have been in close relationships for years or even decades. He stressed that these cases should not be viewed merely as personal tragedies or unfortunate circumstances but rather as serious criminal acts with significant societal consequences.

According to Korajlić, each new instance of femicide serves as a critical social and safety warning, indicating that domestic violence does not discriminate based on age, social status, or stereotypes about perpetrators. The fact that this particular case involves a couple in their sixties further underscores that long-term partnerships are not immune to the escalation of violence. He emphasized that such incidents often reflect deep emotional, psychological, and social crises, including possessiveness, feelings of loss of control, or the belief that there is no escape from a conflict situation. Nevertheless, he cautioned that the specific motivations behind this case must be determined exclusively through an official investigation.

Korajlić pointed out that the most concerning aspect of femicides is their occurrence in private settings, where individuals have been in close contact over extended periods. This highlights the urgent need for continuous efforts to strengthen early risk recognition systems, enhance inter-institutional cooperation between the police, social work centers, health institutions, and the judiciary, and foster a culture that rejects all forms of violence. He warned against romanticizing or presenting femicides as familial tragedies or crimes of passion, emphasizing instead that these are severe criminal acts rooted in gender-based violence.

He noted that numerous studies confirm that threats, previous instances of violence, possessiveness, isolation of a partner, and expressed jealousy are among the most important indicators of high risk that institutions must seriously assess. Korajlić concluded that preventing femicides requires coordinated action from multiple sectors, including social work centers, health institutions, the judiciary, local communities, and media. He reiterated that femicide is not a spontaneous emotional outburst but the culmination of violence that often had preceding warning signals. When a perpetrator takes their own life following a femicide, it is not an act of love or shared departure but the ultimate form of violence in which the perpetrator seeks to maintain control even over another person’s right to life.
