Congo: Ebola fever is rising at record speed

Ebola virus disease is spreading rapidly in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, raising fears that the deadly infection could reach Kinshasa, the capital city with a population of around 19 million people. The outbreak has already claimed over 2,000 lives, with more than 4,300 cases officially recorded since May 15, though officials believe the initial infections may have occurred as early as February. The epicenter of the outbreak lies in Ituri province, a region marked by instability and a large number of internally displaced people. Additional cases have been reported in North and South Kivu provinces, both of which face significant security challenges. The current outbreak is linked to the rare Bundi-Yugyo strain of the virus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment. This has complicated efforts to contain the spread of the disease. According to Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), the rapid increase in cases could surpass the West African Ebola epidemic of 2014–2016, during which nearly 11,000 people died. The WHO predicts the peak of this outbreak will occur within six months. Concerns have grown in Kinshasa, located approximately 2,000 kilometers away from the epicenter. A recent incident heightened these worries. Last week, a boat was stopped near the port of Maluku, about 65 kilometers upstream from Kinshasa, after one passenger had disembarked with symptoms typical of Ebola, fever and diarrhea, and later died. More than 200 passengers were isolated and tested using a mobile laboratory operated by the health ministry and the WHO. All tests came back negative. Despite the negative results, the situation did little to ease anxieties in Kinshasa. One of the main challenges facing the city is its capacity to accommodate patients requiring isolation. In response, the Center for Emergency Response in Public Health (COUSP) is planning to expand its capabilities further. Preparations have been made at the Cinquantenaire Hospital, which has set aside 20 beds specifically for potential Ebola cases. These capacities can be expanded to 200 to 250 beds if needed. Christian Ngandu, coordinator of the hospital, told Deutsche Welle that they are currently exploring options to provide additional beds. Over 120 personnel from different institutions, including hospitals such as Vijana, Sino-Congolais, Kinkole, Kintambo, and Cinquantenaire, have been trained to handle any possible Ebola case. These trained professionals are capable of treating any suspected Ebola patient effectively. Jean-Jacques Muyembe, general director of the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB), emphasized that the country is prepared for an Ebola outbreak in Kinshasa. He stated that epidemiological services and the INRB's laboratory are ready to quickly identify cases. The Ministry of Health has equipped the Cinquantenaire Hospital to receive and fully isolate patients if necessary. “We are prepared,” he said. “We can quickly contain an Ebola outbreak here in Kinshasa.” Health authorities remain vigilant as the virus continues to spread faster than containment measures can keep up. The situation underscores the need for continued vigilance and readiness across the country. Efforts are ongoing to ensure that adequate resources and infrastructure are in place should the virus reach new areas. The focus remains on preventing unexpected developments and ensuring effective responses to any emerging threats.
