Kochi Corpn. mulls introducing hybrid ro-ro ferry on Vypeen-Fort Kochi route to curb noise pollution

Kochi Municipal Corporation is exploring the introduction of a hybrid double-decker roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ferry to operate on the Vypeen, Fort Kochi corridor, citing growing concerns over noise pollution from existing diesel-powered ferries. The proposed change aims to address public grievances and align with environmental goals, according to officials and local stakeholders. The new ferry would carry both passengers and vehicles, offering a cleaner alternative to the current fleet. The decision follows reports of increasing noise complaints from residents and visitors in the historically quiet Fort Kochi area, a key tourist destination known for its heritage sites and scenic beaches. Three diesel-powered ro-ro ferries currently serve the route, including one commissioned recently on July 12 by Cochin Shipyard. These vessels have reportedly disrupted the serene atmosphere of the region, drawing criticism from locals and businesses reliant on tourism. Mayor V.K. Minimol confirmed that the corporation is seeking partial funding from the Urban Challenge Fund under the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to support the hybrid ferry initiative. She mentioned plans to issue municipal bonds to cover half the project’s cost. In the interim, the two older diesel ferries scheduled for dry-docking will undergo modifications aimed at reducing noise and improving engine cooling systems during their overhaul, estimated to cost ₹5 crore. Minimol emphasized that transitioning to hybrid technology would result in significantly reduced operational and maintenance expenses compared to traditional diesel ferries. She noted that the city could not afford prolonged expenditures on repairs and that adopting eco-friendly alternatives would better serve both economic and environmental interests. Local business owner Jose Dominic, who runs a heritage hotel in Fort Kochi, echoed these sentiments. He stated that the presence of diesel ferries had degraded the tranquil ambiance of the area, negatively impacting the visitor experience and overall environment. Dominic urged authorities to adopt modern, sustainable solutions to mitigate noise and air pollution, highlighting the importance of preserving Fort Kochi's appeal to international tourists. Sajan John, Chief Operating Officer of Kochi Water Metro Limited, supported the push toward electrification. He pointed out that electric and hybrid ferries are gaining popularity globally and cited the success of the existing Kochi Water Metro system, which operates without causing noise or air pollution. John stressed that Kochi should not lag behind in implementing such advancements. The proposed hybrid ferry would be capable of transporting up to 50 cars simultaneously, addressing the high volume of traffic on the Vypeen, Fort Kochi route. This move is expected to enhance connectivity while minimizing environmental impact. Officials have yet to announce a specific timeline for implementation, though preliminary discussions are underway regarding funding and technical specifications. Residents and business owners have expressed cautious optimism about the proposal, hoping it will lead to tangible improvements in the local environment and tourism sector. However, some remain skeptical about the feasibility of securing sufficient funding and ensuring timely execution of the project.
