The Intrade and fireworks delighted the Attraction: this is how they paid tribute to the soap makers and fishermen

A vibrant celebration of tradition and heritage took place in Privlaka, a coastal town near Zadar on Croatia’s Adriatic coast, as the annual festival dedicated to local fishermen and sand gatherers brought together residents, expatriates, and tourists from across the Zadar county. The event, known as the "Days of Privlaka Fishermen and Sand Gatherers," filled the town with cultural activities, historical reflections, and a rich gastronomic experience that highlighted the region's unique identity. The central evening of the festival was devoted to honoring the legendary sand gatherers who played a crucial role in rebuilding Zadar and several coastal areas after World War II. These individuals worked under dangerous conditions, extracting sand from shallow waters to help reconstruct the city and its surroundings. Attendees were able to view old photographs and videos on a large screen, searching for faces of their ancestors while feeling a deep sense of pride in their family legacy. This sentiment was echoed by local officials, including Mayor Gašpar Begonja and Iva Zorić Sarađen, director of the local tourist community, who emphasized the importance of preserving this heritage during their speeches. Collaborating with Gastronauts, a group focused on promoting traditional Croatian cuisine, local restaurants such as Amico, Castello, Koćeta, Konoba Planura, and Bistro Moreta presented dishes inspired by the area’s old-time cooking. Among these were specialties like sabunjar’s čičvarda, a type of bean soup, saur made from squid, and šokola, a sweet dessert. Guests could also participate in an art workshop called “Sabun, Painting and Wine” held at Kolišće, where they had the opportunity to engage with the artistic side of the town’s culture. Local agricultural cooperatives also contributed to the event by showcasing their products, reinforcing the connection between tourism and the living story of the destination. Supporting this form of tourism, which aims to convey the authentic narrative of the region, came from Vanja Čvrljak, director of the Tourism Board of the Zadar County. As the festival drew to a close, the atmosphere was electrified by performances from two notable acts. First, the rock band Rockatansky entertained the audience with their energetic music. Following them, the traditional vocal ensemble Klapa Intrade captivated the crowd with their harmonious songs, bringing a sense of unity and nostalgia. The evening culminated in a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the night sky over Privlaka, marking the end of a memorable celebration.
