The Zadar Equestrian Club a place where the love of horses grows into sporting success

In Croatia, two equestrian clubs have emerged as pivotal forces in promoting and advancing horseback riding as both a sport and a cultural tradition. The Konjički klub Medulin, based in Istria, has long been recognized as one of the oldest equestrian clubs in the region, with a rich history and a clear vision for the future of equestrian sports. Under the leadership of Dr. Maja Primate, who has dedicated herself to the club's growth and development, Medulin has become a hub for enthusiasts and serious competitors alike. Her efforts have transformed the club into a center of excellence, known for organizing high-quality competitions in dressage and cross-country riding. The club’s success is further bolstered by its collaboration with national and regional equestrian associations, including the Istrian Equestrian Association and the Croatian Equestrian Federation. A particularly notable partnership is with the Sports Equestrian Club SEM from Zagreb, which has organized events on Medulin’s grounds since 2023. This cooperation has significantly enhanced Medulin’s reputation as a premier destination for equestrian competitions. Beyond the competitions, the true strength of KK Medulin lies in its members, riders, trainers, horse owners, and all those connected to the equestrian community. These individuals regularly compete across Croatia and internationally, showcasing the club's commitment to athlete development. Among them, Mia Matić stands out as one of the most successful young riders in Istria. Competing in the junior category at the level of Parkur L, Mia has achieved remarkable results, particularly in cross-country riding with her horses Ruma and Ajka. She frequently participates in international competitions such as CSI events in Slovenia, Italy, and Slovakia, securing victories and high placements that highlight her growing potential. Mia's journey reflects the importance of having quality horses, effective training systems, and family support in the development of young riders. Her passion for horses was inherited from her mother, Andrea, a veterinarian and active supporter of equestrian sports. Andrea’s involvement underscores how familial connections can play a crucial role in nurturing talent within the sport. Meanwhile, in Dalmatia, the Konjički klub Zadar, founded in 2019, has rapidly gained recognition for its contributions to equestrian sports. Located in Murvice, the club is led by Petra Bikić, a dedicated rider and trainer who has made significant strides in the discipline of eventing, a challenging equestrian sport requiring versatility in dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. Petra’s achievements include numerous tournament wins and titles as the Croatian national champion in eventing. Her decision to remain in Zadar despite offers from other prestigious clubs highlights her commitment to local development. Petra collaborates with experts like Gordana Pavić and has completed advanced training programs, including the FEI Level 1 certification. The club’s training school currently accommodates over 50 participants, while active riders such as Mirjana Anka Gavarcin Bentovanja, Tea Šantek, Noelia Banić, and Emma Damgaard represent the club in competitions. Zadar’s involvement in the Dalmatia Talent Tour, initiated by the Croatian Equestrian Federation in 2017, has helped increase participation in equestrian sports across the region. The project aims to boost the number of riders and the variety of breeds participating in competitions. The club maintains close ties with other Dalmatian clubs, including KK Alkar, KK Sveti Mihovil, and KK Sv. Krševan, fostering a collaborative environment for growth. A defining moment in Petra’s career came in early October 2021 when she won the Croatian Championship in eventing, held at the Zagreb Hippodrome from October 1 to 3. This historic victory marked a culmination of years of dedication and hard work, demonstrating that passion, perseverance, and love for horses can lead to exceptional athletic achievement. Prior to this, Petra had already secured notable results in Zagreb-based eventing tournaments, including a second-place finish at the beginning of 2021. Both clubs exemplify the blend of tradition and innovation in equestrian sports. While KK Medulin preserves its historical roots as Istria’s oldest equestrian club, it simultaneously opens doors for new generations of riders seeking to excel at the highest levels. Similarly, KK Zadar, though younger, has quickly established itself as a vital player in Dalmatian equestrian circles through its dynamic leadership and strategic partnerships. These developments underscore the broader impact of equestrian clubs in shaping the future of the sport in Croatia. By cultivating talent, fostering community engagement, and maintaining rigorous standards, these clubs continue to elevate the profile of equestrian activities nationwide.
