Kim Yo-jong slams G7's denuclearization call, says North Korea's nuclear status is irreversible

North Korea's top political figure, Kim Yo-jong, sharply criticized the Group of Seven (G7) nations for their repeated demands that the country completely dismantle its nuclear program, calling such efforts "outdated" and "detached from reality." Her comments were made in response to the G7 leaders' reaffirmation of their stance on North Korea's denuclearization during their summit held in Evian-les-Bains, France. Kim, who serves as the vice department director of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea and is the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, emphasized that the nation's nuclear status is irreversible and must be respected as a matter of sovereignty.

The G7 leaders, comprising the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, issued a joint statement expressing concerns about North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs. They called for Pyongyang to address the issue of foreign nationals abducted by the country and reiterated their commitment to working together against North Korea's cyber activities and cryptocurrency-related crimes. This statement was part of a broader discussion that included regional and global challenges, such as the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, Ukraine, and the Middle East. The leaders also praised the recent U.S.-Iran agreement aimed at easing tensions and supported the principle of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Kim Yo-jong responded by asserting that the denuclearization issue had already been resolved and that the G7's insistence on North Korea abandoning its nuclear arsenal reflects a lack of understanding of current geopolitical dynamics. She accused the G7 of attempting to interfere in North Korea's constitutional order and questioned the legitimacy of their demands. According to her, North Korea's nuclear weapons are a necessary defense mechanism against perceived threats from hostile states and function as a guarantee of the country's sovereignty and peace. She further stated that the nation's nuclear capabilities are a fundamental aspect of its national security strategy and that their existence is a core national interest that cannot be compromised.

This confrontation highlights the deepening divide between North Korea and the international community regarding the future of its nuclear program. Over the past few years, North Korea has consistently refused to engage in meaningful denuclearization negotiations and has instead reinforced its legal and constitutional frameworks surrounding nuclear weapons. In 2022, the country enacted a new nuclear forces law that explicitly declared its nuclear status as irreversible. Additionally, in 2023, North Korea amended its constitution to further solidify the role of nuclear forces in safeguarding the state.

Despite these developments, the G7 remains steadfast in its pursuit of denuclearization, even as there are indications that some U.S. officials might consider reviving diplomatic relations with North Korea. However, Pyongyang continues to assert that its nuclear arsenal is non-negotiable and will not be relinquished under any circumstances. As tensions persist, the standoff between North Korea and the international community shows no signs of abating, underscoring the complex and volatile nature of the ongoing nuclear issue.
