One of the first patients to benefit from the new technology is David Cliplef, a veterinarian who has lived with kidney failure for four years. Diagnosed with approximately 15 percent kidney function, Cliplef's condition fluctuated until it stabilized at around seven percent. During this time, he relied on dialysis while awaiting a transplant. When a suitable kidney became available from an older deceased donor, it was transported using the XVIVO system, paired with robotic-assisted surgery. Cliplef described the impact of these technological advances on his recovery. "Because of the technology and the advancements we've had in our program here, we were able to marry those two emerging technologies in transplant and he was able to benefit from those," said Levine. Cliplef's post-operative recovery was notably swift. Within a few days of surgery, he was up and walking, and he was discharged from the hospital after about seven to eight days. His current kidney function has reached 60 percent, which is considered normal, although it has slightly declined. Despite this, Cliplef reports having significantly more energy compared to his time on dialysis. He has resumed work at the veterinary clinic, spending three days a week. "It’s nice to feel better, to have more energy and be more optimistic about things going forward," he remarked. The success of the XVIVO Kidney Assist Transport at the University of Alberta Hospital highlights the potential for similar innovations to transform transplant practices nationwide. As the technology continues to be adopted, it promises to enhance the quality of life for many patients awaiting kidney transplants.
