Keralam CM Satheesan hails Cardinal Cleemis as guiding light for society

Kerala’s Chief Minister V D Satheesan praised Cardinal Mar Baselios Cleemis during the valedictory function of the Cardinal’s episcopal silver jubilee, held in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday. Speaking at the event, Satheesan described the Cardinal as a guiding light for society, emphasizing his role as a spiritual and moral beacon. The ceremony marked the culmination of celebrations honoring the Cardinal’s 25 years in service to the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church. Satheesan addressed the gathering not as the head of the state government but as a sibling to the Cardinal, highlighting their close personal relationship. He recounted how, during visits, the Cardinal had consistently offered emotional support and encouragement, providing him with the strength to overcome challenges. “He is the same to everyone who knows him,” Satheesan remarked, underscoring the Cardinal’s universal appeal and approachability. The Chief Minister highlighted the Cardinal’s legacy as the successor to Archbishop Mar Ivanios, noting his pivotal role in steering the Malankara Catholic Church through turbulent periods. Satheesan emphasized that the Cardinal’s influence extended beyond religious matters, impacting public life and fostering unity. “In the Church, in the spiritual realm, and in public life, wherever he intervenes, his mature actions and words bring warmth, love, and a sense of harmony to even the most tense environments,” he stated. Drawing from biblical references, Satheesan likened the Cardinal to the light described in Chapter 60 of the Book of Isaiah, which illuminates darkness and ignorance. “He lives by shining in that light and sharing it with others,” he noted, asserting that the Cardinal’s actions embody the prophetic message. Satheesan further cited the First Letter of St Paul to Timothy, praising the Cardinal for upholding both the essence of faith and the integrity of a clear conscience. The Chief Minister expressed hopes that the Cardinal would continue his mission of guiding humanity away from darkness and toward enlightenment. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the Christian community nationwide, particularly the growing sense of insecurity, and urged the Cardinal’s leadership to provide direction and reassurance. “I hope his leadership will guide them out of that anxiety, instil confidence, and lead them toward true paths of faith and hope,” he concluded. Among the attendees were Union Minister Suresh Gopi, Health Minister K Muraleedharan, and Shashi Tharoor MP, reflecting the wide-ranging recognition of the Cardinal’s contributions. The event underscored the deep respect and admiration held for Cardinal Cleemis, both within the church and among political leaders.
