Kerala floods 2026: Chief Minister comes under Opposition criticism over flood management, participation in private events

Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan faced intense scrutiny from the opposition following the 2026 floods, with critics accusing him of poor flood management and inappropriate behavior during the crisis. On Sunday, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] State secretariat released a statement condemning the chief minister's actions, particularly highlighting his absence from critical decision-making and his involvement in private events while the state grappled with unprecedented flooding. The CPI(M) accused the chief minister of failing in his duties as head of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority. They pointed out that despite heavy rainfall in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts, only an orange alert was issued until Saturday morning. By the time a red alert was declared, many regions were already submerged, indicating a failure in early warning systems and emergency response protocols. The party criticized the delayed arrival of the Coastal Police, which took 13 hours to reach fishermen stranded after their boat capsized near Muthalapozhi in Thiruvananthapuram. Opposition leaders also raised concerns about the chief minister's attendance at a private lunch hosted at his residence in Ponnani on Saturday. Additionally, they highlighted the use of the government’s helicopter for personal purposes, which contradicted its intended use for disaster relief. The CPI(M) noted that the previous leader of the opposition had previously criticized similar expenditures, suggesting hypocrisy in current practices. Congress MLA C. Noushad Ali defended the chief minister, arguing that such criticisms should not be politicized during a humanitarian crisis. He questioned whether it was appropriate to scrutinize the chief minister's personal choices during the monsoon season. Ali contrasted Satheesan's conduct with that of former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who was known for maintaining constant communication with the media during emergencies. Vijayan, currently the leader of the opposition, expressed disappointment with the current administration's handling of the floods. He stated that the government's negligence and lack of coordination exacerbated the suffering of affected communities. Vijayan specifically mentioned the failure to issue timely warnings regarding the opening of a dam near Ranni, leaving traders unprepared to secure their goods. He also criticized the inadequate food distribution in relief camps, noting that government agencies acknowledged these lapses and that volunteers and community members had to step in to provide assistance. The opposition leader emphasized the need for a thorough examination of administrative failures to ensure such shortcomings do not recur in future disasters.
