Smart ventilation systems are becoming increasingly essential in Slovenian homes to combat humidity and mold growth, according to recent developments in home technology. These systems help maintain fresh air quality, regulate moisture levels, and reduce the risk of mold formation. However, many users tend to set their ventilation systems once and forget them, despite changing conditions caused by cooking, cleaning, human presence, or weather fluctuations throughout the day. Modern ventilation systems can be controlled via remote or mobile applications, but they often remain static during sleep hours or when occupants are away. This is where smart systems come into play, automatically monitoring environmental conditions and adjusting ventilation accordingly to prevent excessive moisture buildup and the conditions favorable for mold growth. Humidity, stuffiness, poor air quality, respiratory irritation, and recurring mold issues are problems often treated separately, even though they frequently share common causes. Air in living spaces does not circulate effectively enough, allowing moisture to accumulate in areas that create ideal conditions for mold development. When black spots appear on walls, the problem has likely been present for some time. Cleaning and whitening remove visible effects but not the underlying cause. If room conditions remain unchanged, mold will inevitably return. More and more people are asking whether these challenges can be addressed through technology. Is there a system capable of detecting high humidity levels and ensuring efficient ventilation? The i-Cube system, developed in Slovenia, offers such a solution. It is the world's first device of its kind that measures air quality in the central area of a room where people actually live and connects this data with automatic control of the ventilation system. The i-Cube operates autonomously, activating every 15 minutes to briefly measure air conditions and determine if adjustments are needed. Unlike traditional ventilation systems, which rely on fixed settings, i-Cube dynamically responds to real-time changes in humidity and air quality, making it more effective in preventing mold and maintaining optimal indoor climate conditions. Mold does not develop overnight. For its growth, certain conditions must persist over time, primarily high relative humidity. Experts warn that the risk of mold significantly increases when relative humidity consistently exceeds 60 percent. This situation commonly arises due to a combination of factors. Modern homes with good insulation and sealed windows are energy-efficient but hinder natural air exchange. Humidity generated from cooking, cleaning, drying laundry, or even breathing becomes trapped within enclosed spaces. Problems become more pronounced in cooler parts of the house. When warm, moist air comes into contact with cold surfaces such as walls, corners, or cabinet backs, moisture condenses. Mold tends to appear most frequently in these areas. Low temperatures in specific rooms can further accelerate mold growth, as colder surfaces reach dew point more easily. Mold is not merely an aesthetic nuisance. Its spores can irritate the respiratory tract, trigger allergic reactions, and worsen conditions for individuals suffering from asthma or other respiratory diseases. Prolonged exposure to high humidity and mold can damage walls and significantly decrease property value, often before homeowners realize how severe the issue truly is. Experts recommend that the relative humidity in residential spaces should be maintained between 40 and 60 percent. Within this range, air is comfortable for living while minimizing the risk of mold growth. If humidity is too low, the air becomes excessively dry and irritates mucous membranes. If it is too high, conditions conducive to mold development begin to form.
