Kaizer Chiefs teenager Naphtali Mokoena has shared insights into his recent pre-season training tour in Spain, highlighting the developmental opportunities gained from competing against international clubs. The 19-year-old goalkeeper, who has been training with the senior squad, described the experience as both challenging and enriching. This is his second overseas trip with the club, having previously traveled to the United Kingdom with the reserves last year as a reward for their title win. During the Spanish tour, Mokoena participated in three friendly matches, though he did not see action in any of them. He noted the physicality of the opposition, which he believes the Chiefs can match through improved conditioning. “We match them skill-wise and in pace, so we will look at working on building our strength going forward,” he stated. The tour took place under the guidance of the club’s new technical team, including head coach Fernando da Cruz and goalkeeper coach Olivier Sorin. Mokoena expressed appreciation for the trust placed in him by the coaching staff, calling their support “lovely” and expressing gratitude for the chance to learn from seasoned professionals. “This is my first time working with them and I want to thank them for granting me this opportunity and for showing belief in me and my ability,” he said. The Chiefs concluded their Spanish tour with a match against La Liga side Elche CF on Mandela Day. After returning to South Africa, the squad will prepare for the Toyota Cup clash against Zimbabwean side Scottland FC in Rustenburg on Saturday. For Mokoena, the tour has served as a confidence booster, reinforcing his belief that the club’s younger players are capable of holding their own against top-tier teams.
