Jimmy Alapag returns to PBA as new NLEX head coach

Jimmy Alapag, one of the most celebrated figures in Philippine basketball history, has returned to the PBA as the new head coach of the NLEX Road Warriors. The announcement came on June 29, marking a significant moment for both the player-coach transition and the future of the franchise. Alapag, who previously played for the TNT Tropang Titans, Meralco Bolts, and now NLEX, is stepping into a role that blends his deep understanding of the game with his newfound expertise in coaching.

The decision to appoint Alapag comes after a period where the Road Warriors struggled to break through in the playoffs, failing to advance beyond the quarterfinals in recent seasons. After retiring briefly in 2015, Alapag moved to Meralco, where he surpassed the career three-point total of league legend Allan Caidic before being overtaken by Marcio Lassiter in 2024. His transition to coaching began with success in the ASEAN Basketball League, where he guided Alab Pilipinas to the championship in 2018. This achievement demonstrated his ability to lead teams effectively, even outside the PBA.

In 2020, Alapag left the Philippines during the height of the coronavirus pandemic to pursue coaching opportunities in the NBA. He started as an assistant coach for the Sacramento Kings' Summer League and later joined the G League with the Stockton Kings. By 2023, he had become a player development coach for the Kings, a position he held until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
