Jennifer Garner on her horrifying experience with the paparazzi

Jennifer Garner has spoken publicly about the alarming experiences she and her children endured due to relentless paparazzi pursuit during their time together with Ben Affleck. The Hollywood actress revealed how photographers followed them relentlessly, even endangering public safety and disrupting the lives of innocent bystanders. With three children, Violet, 20; Finn, 17; and Samuel, 12—Garner described situations where photographers drove through residential areas, blocked access to medical facilities, and even knocked over young children near preschools. The incidents began years ago, with two photographers following her for more than two decades. At one point, she developed an unusual relationship with one of them, based on a certain level of respect. However, this photographer’s aggressive behavior led Garner to call the police multiple times. She recounted instances where he would follow her and her children despite her requests for peace, even asking for just a quiet walk around the block with her dog. Garner emphasized that the paparazzi's obsession with capturing images of her family went beyond acceptable limits. During their marriage, the constant surveillance created a sense of danger not only for her but also for others nearby. One particularly disturbing incident occurred when she tried to take her sick child to a doctor, only to find the entrance blocked by photographers. “Something is wrong,” she said, adding that the cost was being paid by her children. Her son had to stop playing soccer because of the paparazzi’s presence. The sports club where he trained reportedly asked him not to attend practices anymore due to the overwhelming number of vehicles arriving daily. This disruption affected not only his personal life but also his ability to pursue his interests freely. Garner also highlighted the emotional toll on her children. Her daughter, Violet, who was just three years old at the time, became a target of aggressive paparazzi behavior. In 2009, Garner raised concerns about the aggressive actions toward her toddler. By the age of six, Violet expressed her feelings at a family gathering, standing up and saying that children shouldn’t have to live this way. “We didn’t ask for this,” Garner recalled, describing how the cameras were terrifying and how the men behaved aggressively among themselves, making her children feel trapped. Garner has long advocated for stricter laws to protect the privacy of children of celebrities. In 2013, she testified in support of a California law aimed at shielding children of famous parents from excessive media intrusion. She believes that the current system fails to provide adequate protection and that the focus should shift from sensationalism to the well-being of families. Despite the challenges, Garner acknowledges the privileges that fame brings. Yet, she insists that the paparazzi’s interest in her family has consistently exceeded reasonable boundaries. Her ongoing efforts highlight the need for greater awareness and legal measures to ensure that the rights of children of public figures are respected and protected.
