Sergej Poposki, a 23-year-old singer from Prilepa, has become a sensation on TikTok with his emotionally charged performances recorded in a Slovenian garage. His videos have garnered over 170,000 views, drawing attention not just for their raw authenticity but for the emotional depth he brings to each performance. The question now circulating among music enthusiasts in North Macedonia is whether Poposki could one day follow in the footsteps of the legendary Toše Proeski, whose influence still looms large in the country’s musical landscape. Born into a family with a rich artistic heritage, Poposki's journey began in childhood. His grandfather, a classically trained musician, introduced him to the piano at age five and encouraged him to begin singing. This early exposure laid the foundation for a career that would eventually take him far beyond local stages. By the time he was 15, he had enrolled in the private music school Matrix, initially aspiring to play bass guitar before discovering his true passion for vocal performance under the guidance of mentor Denis Dimoski. His breakthrough came at the age of 16 when he competed in the Ezeri Biseri singing competition, performing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra and securing second place. This marked the beginning of a steady rise through national and international competitions, festivals, and charity events. In 2024, he made his mark at the Ohrid Festival with the song “Nema Nikogaš Pak,” earning the Dolni Saraj award. That same year, he debuted at the prestigious Makfest, performing the ballad “Site Utra.” The turning point in his career arrived in 2025 during the International Students' Summer Festival in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he placed third in the expert jury category. However, it was in January of this year that Poposki achieved his most significant success yet. At the WAF Awards in Skopje, he won the Grand Prix, the highest honor at the festival. This recognition solidified his status as an emerging artist worthy of serious attention. What sets Poposki apart from other young performers is his approach to interpretation. While his vocal range spans from deep tones to high notes, he prioritizes emotion over technical perfection. His style resonates most strongly with ballads, which allow him to fully express the heartfelt storytelling that defines his artistry. Despite the comparisons to Toše Proeski, Poposki remains focused on building his own unique identity. He acknowledges the weight of such associations but sees them more as a compliment than a burden. “Toše was something unparalleled. If someone hears something in my voice or emotion that reminds them of him, I can be honored. But my goal is to tell my own story and develop my own musical identity,” he says. With his growing popularity on TikTok and a string of notable achievements, Poposki continues to carve his path. His future seems bright, and while the question of whether he will follow in Toše Proeski’s footsteps remains open, one thing is clear, his voice and passion are already making waves in the world of contemporary music.
