Jake Reiner says he hasn’t spoken to his brother as he opens up about grief

Jake Reiner, 35, has not spoken to his brother Nick Reiner since the brutal slayings of their parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, in December 2023. In his first public interview since the tragedy, Jake shared his emotional struggle with grief during a sit-down with KABC-TV in Los Angeles. The interview marked the eighth month since the killings, which shocked the entertainment industry and drew widespread attention due to the prominence of the victims. Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were discovered stabbed in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2023. Their son Nick, 32, was arrested shortly after the incident. Jake described the experience as feeling both like “eight years” and “eight minutes,” emphasizing the ongoing pain of losing his parents and the emotional toll of watching his brother face legal consequences. Jake revealed that he has not attended any of Nick’s court proceedings nor engaged in communication with him. “He’s in jail, so, you know, it’s like I physically lost my parents and then Nick was arrested. And it’s like now, it’s just me and Romy,” he said, referring to his 28-year-old sister, Romy Reiner. The loss left Jake grappling with intense emotions, including anger and confusion over the circumstances surrounding the murders. During the interview, Jake expressed frustration over the lack of understanding regarding the events. “I’ll never understand. I don’t care how it’s explained to me. I don’t care what facts come out. I will never understand why this happened,” he stated. The grief, he said, often manifested into feelings of rage and injustice, particularly because he felt powerless to prevent the tragedy. The initial moments of discovery came when Jake was at Los Angeles' Union Station for a celebration of life event for a friend. His sister called, informing him of the death of their father and the disappearance of their mother. “She called immediately again, and I knew at that point something immediately was wrong. Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find Mom.’ And I immediately went into shock. I need to get out of this train station, and I need to get to my parents’ house,” he recounted. When asked if he was surprised to learn that his brother was the primary suspect, Jake hesitated before declining to comment. He instead focused on reflecting on his parents’ efforts to support Nick, acknowledging their unwavering commitment to helping him despite his struggles with drug addiction and mental health issues. Jake mentioned that his father had worked on a film titled Being Charlie in 2016, which explored themes related to recovery. “I can tell you, they never stopped wanting to help him. They never stopped helping him,” he said. “And I think that project was a way for my dad to try and connect with him.” Despite the trauma, Jake has chosen to channel his energy into continuing the legacy of his parents. He plans to attend the Children’s Institute gala in November, an organization dedicated to supporting children and families. “It’s going to be hard. I think everything that we’ve done so far without them has been hard and weird. But I do feel responsible for making sure people know them and they remember them,” he said. Meanwhile, Nick Reiner faces charges of two counts of murder, including special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait. His case remains active in court, and earlier this year, he submitted a request to access his more than $1.5 million trust fund to assist with his legal defense. As the legal process unfolds, Jake continues to navigate the complex landscape of grief, memory, and responsibility.
