Jagan accuses A.P. government of harassing YSRCP leaders with false police cases

Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, president of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), accused the Andhra Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of using false police cases to harass YSRCP leaders. The allegations came during a visit to Srikakulam District Jail on Thursday, where he met with the family of former Minister Seediri Appalaraju. Mr. Appalaraju, who was arrested on July 22 for allegedly misleading investigators and tampering with evidence in a hit-and-run case, was reportedly denied a meeting with Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy due to scheduling delays. The incident unfolded following a fatal road accident on July 10, when a 45-year-old man named Danayya died after being struck by a two-wheeler allegedly driven by the son of Mr. Appalaraju. The case has sparked controversy, with Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy asserting that the government is targeting the YSRCP leadership through fabricated legal actions. He pledged to provide legal assistance to secure Mr. Appalaraju's release, emphasizing the need for justice and fairness. During his visit, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy was joined by several prominent figures including former Ministers Dharmana Prasada Rao and Dharmana Krishnadas, as well as Opposition leader Botcha Satyanarayanna. These individuals accompanied him to the jail and engaged in confrontations with the police, claiming that they were subjected to “unprecedented restrictions” during his tour. They also alleged that a minor lathicharge occurred at the jail premises, which they condemned as excessive force. In response, Sub-inspector Pravallika of the local police claimed that the YSRCP leaders obstructed law enforcement operations, suggesting that the accusations of harassment were unfounded. This disagreement highlights the tension between the ruling government and the opposition party over the handling of legal matters involving public officials. Prior to visiting the jail, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy had already visited multiple locations across Srikakulam district, including Bhogapuram, Natavalasa, Pusapatirega, Ranasthalam, Etcherla, and Srikakulam. His itinerary included interactions with other YSRCP leaders, underscoring the significance of the visit as part of a broader campaign to support party members facing legal challenges. Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy further criticized the government for setting a harmful precedent by filing cases against parents when their children are involved in road accidents.
