The incident gained international attention due to the distressing account of Layan Hamada, a 15-year-old cousin of Rajab, who called the Palestinian Red Crescent paramedics while under attack, describing the imminent danger and the loss of her family. Despite efforts by the paramedics to rescue Rajab, the child and five others were found dead 12 days later, along with two medics who had responded to the scene. The military confirmed that it had fired at the ambulance carrying Rajab and the two medics, resulting in their deaths. This admission came alongside the announcement of criminal probes into the killing of the 15 paramedics, who were attempting to assist injured civilians in the southern city of Rafah. These medics were part of the Red Crescent and were reportedly targeted by Israeli forces while en route to provide medical care. One deputy commander within the military was ordered to resign following the incident. The case of the 15 paramedics took place in May 2025, drawing widespread condemnation both locally and internationally. The military acknowledged the incident and initiated internal inquiries, though it chose not to pursue legal action against the other incidents involving aid workers. Notably, the military did not address the August 2025 strike on a hospital in southern Gaza, which killed five journalists, including Mariam Dagga, a freelancer for the Associated Press. Hind Rajab’s grandmother, also named Hind Rajab, expressed disappointment with the limited scope of the investigation, emphasizing the need for an international inquiry into the broader context of civilian casualties, particularly among children.
