Irani Cup, Asian Games and ODIs leave little room to prepare for NZ series, BGT

India's cricketing authorities face mounting pressure as the tightly packed international calendar threatens to undermine crucial preparations for upcoming Test series, particularly the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia in early 2027 and the upcoming Tests against New Zealand in November. The scheduling conflicts involving the Irani Cup, the Asian Games, and the West Indies ODI series have raised serious concerns among players and officials about the ability to adequately prepare for these high-stakes matches. The current situation stems from the overlapping schedules of multiple tournaments, creating logistical challenges for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Test captain Shubman Gill has advocated for more spin-friendly conditions during training sessions ahead of the BGT, suggesting that Indian batsmen need better exposure to turning pitches. However, the planned matches against Australia 'A' in Puducherry are clashing with the Irani Cup, which is set to take place in Srinagar from October 1 to 5. This overlap limits the availability of top Test players for the Australia 'A' matches, potentially affecting both the quality of the matches and the preparation of the main squad. According to a BCCI source, the challenge lies in balancing the strength of the Irani Cup team with the need to give Test players proper preparation. If too many key players are pulled for the Australia 'A' matches, the Rest of India team might lack depth, which could lower the overall standard of the Irani Cup. Conversely, if the focus is solely on the Irani Cup, the Test players miss valuable match practice on turning pitches. The two four-day matches against Australia 'A' are scheduled for September 22–25 and September 29–October 2, further complicating the planning. In addition to the domestic fixtures, the Indian cricket team is preparing for the Asian Games, which will see a large number of players traveling abroad. This adds another layer of complexity, as the selectors may need to rely on reserve players for the upcoming three-match ODI series against the West Indies starting on September 27. VVS Laxman, serving as head coach at the Asian Games, has reportedly requested four additional net bowlers due to concerns about the accommodation arrangements for the team. The scheduling issues extend beyond the Asian Games and into the preparations for the New Zealand Tests, which begin with five T20Is on October 22. The India 'A' team is scheduled to play three four-day matches from October 24, overlapping with the ODI series. The first Test is set to start just four days after the final ODI, leaving little time for recovery and preparation. A BCCI source explained that the team management had to submit a list of nearly 60 players for visa applications, highlighting the difficulty in managing such a compressed schedule. Sources within the BCCI indicated that the selectors and team management are working diligently to find a solution that allows key Test players to be released from the ODI squad after the third match, providing them enough time to prepare for the Tests. Both Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir have emphasized the importance of having at least 10 to 14 days of preparation before a major Test series, underscoring the potential risks of inadequate readiness.
