Trump says easing sanctions on Iran will benefit mostly American farmers.
US President Donald Trump stated that any easing of sanctions against Iran would largely benefit American farmers, warning Tehran must fulfill its obligations or face consequences. He claimed over 90 million Iranians face serious food insecurity and emphasized that funds released from lifted sanctions would be spent on importing US agricultural products. Trump highlighted that the Strait of Hormuz was 'completely open' and noted the US recorded the largest single-day oil transit through the strait. He warned Iran that Washington would act if Tehran fails to meet its commitments under the broader nuclear agreement. The US and Iran signed a 14-point understanding last week, initiating a 60-day negotiation period to resolve disputes including Iran's enriched uranium stockpile, its nuclear program, and other unresolved issues.
The United States has officially released the full text of the agreement reached with Iran, marking a significant diplomatic milestone after years of tension between the two nations. The document, titled "Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding Between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran," outlines 14 key points aimed at resolving conflicts, easing sanctions, and laying the groundwork for a comprehensive agreement. This memorandum was made public following requests from both sides to ensure transparency and clarity regarding its terms. According to the U.S. administration, this agreement serves as a framework for opening the Strait of Hormuz, alleviating financial restrictions against Iran, and initiating negotiations on a final agreement that would address Iran's nuclear program.
One of the highest-ranking American officials stated that the agreement allows for the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz, defines Iran’s obligations concerning nuclear issues, and anticipates the possibility of gradually lifting sanctions and providing economic support if negotiations progress. The memorandum stipulates that the U.S. and Iran, along with allies involved in the current conflict, will declare an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. Both parties commit to not launching military actions against each other nor using or threatening force.
Mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as non-interference in internal affairs, are also confirmed. The final agreement is expected to be reached within 60 days, with the possibility of extension upon mutual consent.
A central point of the agreement relates to maritime traffic. The United States commits to beginning the removal of its naval blockade against Iran immediately after signing the memorandum and fully ending it within 30 days. Simultaneously, the U.S. will withdraw its forces from near Iran 30 days after reaching a final agreement.
Iran commits to enabling safe and free passage for commercial ships between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea over a 60-day period and removing technical and military obstacles, including mine clearance, within 30 days. The document also provides for discussions between Iran and Oman on future management and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz.
The memorandum includes plans for the restoration and economic development of Iran valued at at least $300 billion. The United States has committed to developing mechanisms with regional partners to implement this plan and issuing necessary licenses and permits for financial transactions.
Special attention is given to sanctions. The U.S. commits to lifting all types of sanctions against Iran, including UN Security Council resolutions, IAEA Board of Governors decisions, as well as primary and secondary U.S. sanctions, according to a schedule defined in the final agreement.
Regarding the nuclear program, Iran confirms that it will not acquire or develop nuclear weapons. Both sides state that the issue of existing enriched material stockpiles will be resolved through a mechanism agreed upon during negotiations, with the possibility of dilution under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Until the conclusion of the final agreement, the existing status quo is to be maintained. Iran will not change its current status of its nuclear program, while the United States will not introduce new sanctions or deploy additional forces in the region.
The document also provides exemptions for the export of Iranian crude oil, petroleum products, and derivatives, including related banking, transportation, and insurance services. Additionally, the U.S. commits to enabling access to these exports.
Iran has confirmed the information about the agreement through state media, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stating that the agreement will be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland. Gharibabadi said that an immediate and lasting end to war and military operations on various fronts, including Lebanon, will be announced tonight.
More details of the U.S.-Iran agreement have yet to be published. Tehran confirmed the information through state media, while the U.S. side did so via President Donald Trump.
"The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now concluded. Congratulations to everyone!" Trump posted late last night.
Trump simultaneously announced his approval of the opening of the Strait of Hormuz without tolls and the immediate lifting of the naval blockade conducted by the United States.
"I fully approve the opening of the Strait of Hormuz without tolls, and simultaneously approve the immediate lifting of the naval blockade by the United States," Trump stated.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that an agreement had been reached between the United States and Iran and that mediators would organize a series of meetings this week to finalize the details of the agreement.
According to Sharif, the agreement includes "an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon."
Sharif posted on social media X that the official ceremony for signing the agreement will take place on June 19 in Switzerland.
Sharif thanked the United States and Iran for their commitment to achieving the agreement and Qatar for supporting the negotiation process.
"I especially thank the visionary leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Turkey for their great contribution to this process," Sharif wrote.
He added that a series of meetings will be held this week to lay the foundation for technical negotiations and prepare for the official signing ceremony of the agreement.
Trump expressed his stance on operations in Lebanon, stating he does not want Israel to halt its military campaign in Lebanon but expects Israeli authorities to demonstrate "good judgment" as the agreement approaches signing.
When asked whether Israel should stop its military operations in Lebanon, Trump replied that he supports Israel's right to self-defense.
"No, I want Israel to be able to defend itself," Trump said.
However, he immediately added:
"But I want Israel to use good judgment."
His statement comes at a time when U.S. and Iranian officials have announced that a memorandum of understanding could be formally signed on Friday, potentially opening the way for a lasting agreement and calming the conflict in the Middle East.
"Iran wants to sign an agreement," Trump said, expressing belief that Tehran is ready to formalize the agreement reached in recent days.
"This is a very detailed and much more serious agreement than a typical political declaration," Trump said.
He added that Washington would continue further efforts even if the agreement is not signed.
"If they don't do it, that's fine. We'll have to restart the entire process," Trump said.
"A Wall Against Nuclear Weapons"
Trump reiterated claims from his administration that the agreement would permanently prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
"My agreement is a wall against nuclear weapons," Trump said.
He emphasized that no previous U.S. administration had achieved what his administration is now trying to accomplish.
"No one else has done this except Trump. Forty-seven years Iran has exploited the world, and no one has done anything," Trump said.
His statements come amid ongoing battles in southern Lebanon, which are considered one of the greatest challenges for implementing the U.S.-Iran agreement. Tehran previously warned that new Israeli operations in Lebanon and the continued presence of Israeli forces on Lebanese territory would be seen as a violation of the agreement.
Trump expressed happiness that the agreement with Iran is already signed and that its content will be published after the official ceremony planned for Friday.
Speaking ahead of a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump said that the Strait of Hormuz will be completely open for maritime traffic after the signing.
The U.S. president highlighted that he has not yet decided whether he will personally attend the ceremony in Geneva but confirmed that Deputy Vice President JD Vance will be present there.
"Very happy to say this: The agreement is fully signed. And the strait, as you know, is already partially opened," Trump said.
Vance earlier stated that the agreement was digitally signed on Sunday and that no financial assets were released at that time.
On the question of when the memorandum of understanding will be published publicly, Trump responded:
"Probably very soon. I would say some time after Friday. I think it will be in the very near future."
Speaking about the potential easing of sanctions against Tehran, Trump conveyed that everything depends on the actions of Iranian authorities.
"That is really a matter of behavior. If they work on what they need to work on, then it will start taking effect," Trump said.
Attack in Lebanon After Agreement Announcement
While Tehran has not yet officially confirmed that the agreement has been formally signed, the situation on the ground continues to cause concern.
Israel, which did not participate in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran, carried out a drone attack on a car in southern Lebanon, where clashes have been ongoing with pro-Iranian Hezbollah for months.
Iran insists that any final agreement must include a complete cessation of hostilities in that area.
Fall in Oil Prices and Rise in Indices
The announcement of the possible end of the conflict positively affected the markets. Oil prices fell due to expectations of stabilization in global energy supply, while stock indices recorded growth.
According to information from both sides, the agreement predicts the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and extending the ceasefire for an additional 60 days, during which the most contentious issues, including the future of Iran's nuclear program, should be resolved.
Vance noted that a final agreement could allow Iran access to a reconstruction fund worth up to $300 billion, provided Tehran fulfills its obligations related to the nuclear program.
Earlier, Trump called on shipping companies to resume sailing through the strategic waterway.
"Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow again," Trump said, later adding:
"Ships have started sailing, many loaded with oil, exiting the Strait of Hormuz."
Iran clarified the agreement with the U.S., stating that frozen funds would be returned and sanctions lifted, with nuclear weapons being addressed later.
In his first address to the media after the preliminary agreement was published, Iran's spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, offered insight into Iran's perspective on what was agreed.
"In addition to issues related to the nuclear program, these are topics that will be discussed immediately after the signing of the agreement," Baghaei said.
