Iran hosts Khamenei funeral at mosque complex that remains unfinished after three decades

Iran is holding funeral ceremonies for former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the partially completed Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla complex in Tehran. The site, which has been under construction since the 1990s and remains unfinished after over three decades, is being used to display Khamenei's coffin and accommodate mourners and foreign dignitaries. The funeral events are part of a week-long mourning period following Khamenei's death during the regional conflict. His body will eventually be transferred to Qom, Najaf, and Karbala in Iraq before returning to Iran for burial. While the complex was originally intended as a new venue for Friday prayers, parts of it have been used for religious and state functions. Khamenei's son, Mojtaba, who succeeded him as supreme leader, is not expected to attend due to injuries sustained in the attack that killed his father.
