A Mexican influencer known online as “Cesarín” was shot dead during a live-streamed TikTok session, according to reports from local media. The incident occurred on Tuesday in Culiacán, the largest city in the state of Sinaloa, where the 25-year-old content creator was killed with a firearm while preparing to upload one of his popular comedic videos. The victim, whose real name is Cesar Gastélum, was among three individuals dressed as clowns who had gathered at a fast-food restaurant’s drive-thru window. They were set to launch a viral social challenge, a common trend on platforms such as TikTok, where users perform actions and invite others to replicate them. As they prepared to begin the challenge, two masked motorcyclists suddenly arrived. One of them fired a gun at Gastélum at close range before fleeing the scene quickly. His two companions remained uninjured but were reportedly shaken by the attack. The live stream was immediately cut off, and the footage, which spread rapidly online, has since been removed from the platform. Authorities have cordoned off the area and are conducting forensic investigations. The body of Gastélum was transported to the Forensic Medicine Service (Semefo) for an autopsy. The Attorney General's Office has opened an investigation into the case, though no official leads have been disclosed so far. Security cameras at the location have captured the incident, and these images will be examined as part of the ongoing probe. On TikTok, Gastélum had amassed nearly 600,000 followers and over 22.2 million likes. His content included humorous sketches, character impersonations, music covers, and daily activity vlogs. This incident adds to a growing list of digital creators who have fallen victim to violence linked to rival drug cartel conflicts. The method of the killing bears resemblance to the murder of Valeria Marquez, another influencer in the beauty industry. In May 2025, she was shot dead during a live TikTok session at her salon in Zapopan, Jalisco. The case highlights the dangers faced by content creators in Mexico, particularly those operating in regions under the influence of organized crime. While the exact motives behind the shooting remain unclear, the involvement of armed assailants suggests a possible link to ongoing criminal disputes. Local authorities have not yet commented publicly on the circumstances surrounding the attack, nor have they released any information regarding potential suspects or motives. Gastélum’s death has sparked widespread concern among digital creators and their audiences. Many have expressed outrage and sadness on social media, calling for greater safety measures and legal protections for content producers. Some have also raised questions about the broader implications of using public spaces for live streams, especially in areas where security risks are high. Despite these concerns, there are currently no indications that the incident will lead to immediate changes in how influencers operate or interact with their audience through live content.
