Indonesia marks fourth year without terrorist attacks

Indonesia has completed its fourth consecutive year without a terrorist attack, according to statements made by senior officials during a press briefing in Jakarta. Deputy Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Lodewijk F. Paulus highlighted this milestone, emphasizing the need for sustained vigilance against potential threats. The achievement reflects the combined efforts of national counterterrorism agencies, law enforcement bodies, and community engagement initiatives aimed at preventing radicalization and disrupting terrorist networks. The Ministry of Home Affairs, through the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) and the police's Special Detachment 88 (Densus 88), has been instrumental in maintaining this record. Over the past four years, authorities have successfully foiled 28 planned terrorist attacks, according to BNPT head Eddy Hartono. Eddy Hartono warned that while the country has achieved a notable milestone, vigilance must remain high. “We do not want to see any more victims of terrorism,” he stated, noting that the work of agencies such as the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) and law enforcement must continue in tandem with broader societal participation. The government has also issued warnings about evolving methods of extremist recruitment, particularly through the internet. Officials believe that new tactics, including the use of encrypted messaging apps and targeted propaganda, could pose challenges in the future. As a result, there are ongoing discussions about strengthening legal frameworks and enhancing international cooperation to combat transnational terrorism.
