Culture Ministry, ANTARA explore culture collaboration

Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture officially opened the Ranggawarsita Library in Jakarta on Monday, marking a new initiative aimed at expanding access to cultural knowledge and supporting academic and creative research. The library was inaugurated with the goal of serving as a central hub for cultural studies, housing resources spanning historical records, current publications, and future-oriented research. Culture Minister Fadli Zon emphasized the library’s role in preserving and disseminating cultural knowledge, stating it would function as a key reference point for scholars, students, and professionals engaged in cultural work. The Ranggawarsita Library’s collection includes over 14,000 physical books and approximately 6,000 digital titles, many of which were produced by the Ministry of Culture and its predecessor agencies. These include publications from the former Ministry of Education and Culture, the former Ministry of Culture and Tourism, as well as culturally relevant works from various publishers. The ministry plans to continue digitizing government-owned intellectual property, ensuring broader public access to these materials. This effort aligns with the ministry’s commitment to making cultural resources more widely available, particularly to researchers, academics, and individuals working in journalism and literature. Visitors to the library can access physical books on-site for use in research projects such as dissertations, undergraduate and postgraduate theses, and journalistic investigations related to cultural topics. The library is designed to serve as a dynamic resource, with ongoing efforts to expand its holdings through acquisitions. These include additional publications from the Ministry of Culture and materials sourced from regional offices and cultural heritage preservation centers. This strategy ensures the library remains up-to-date and comprehensive in its offerings. The National Library of Indonesia, led by Head Endang Aminudin Aziz, has taken steps to ensure the smooth operation of the Ranggawarsita Library. A dedicated librarian has been appointed to oversee daily functions, and the library has been formally registered under the Library Identification Number system to facilitate administrative processes and track its development. Aminudin highlighted the evolving nature of libraries, noting that they have transitioned from traditional repositories of information to platforms promoting social inclusion through programs focused on community engagement and accessibility. Support for the library’s growth comes from the National Archives of Indonesia, headed by Mego Pinandito. His institution has pledged to assist in identifying and retrieving archival materials that could enhance the library’s collection. “The National Archives will continue helping locate and trace archival items necessary for the library’s continued development,” Pinandito stated. This collaboration underscores the importance of integrating historical documents into contemporary cultural discourse. The launch of the Ranggawarsita Library reflects broader national priorities around literacy and cultural preservation. The National Library has incorporated initiatives to foster a stronger reading culture within its 2025–2029 strategic plan, emphasizing the role of libraries in building a literate society. Officials stress that enhanced access to cultural knowledge contributes to national productivity and societal cohesion. As the library begins its operational phase, it is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing Indonesia’s cultural scholarship and public engagement with heritage and creativity.
