Indonesia expands fishing village program to boost coastal welfare

Indonesia is expanding its Red and White Fishing Village (KNMP) program to enhance the welfare of coastal communities, with officials aiming to complete development at up to 1,269 locations by the end of this year. The initiative was announced during a visit to Konawe District in Southeast Sulawesi, where Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono inspected infrastructure projects in Sorue Jaya Village. This site is among the first 100 locations to finish development under the program. President Prabowo Subianto is expected to officially inaugurate some of these villages in the near future. The KNMP program includes the construction of essential infrastructure such as ice factories, cold storage units, fueling stations for fishing vessels, and a culinary center in Konawe. These facilities are designed to support both fish capture and processing activities, offering new economic opportunities for local residents while increasing regional fisheries output. Trenggono emphasized that the program aims to address long-standing neglect of coastal areas, which have historically received less attention compared to other sectors of the economy. The minister outlined broader ambitions for the KNMP initiative, noting that President Prabowo has set a goal to upgrade and modernize 5,000 fishing villages under the national priority program by the end of his presidential term in 2029. This expansion aligns with efforts to develop Indonesia’s maritime resources and promote sustainable economic growth along the coast. Trenggono pointed out that after achieving agricultural self-sufficiency through investments in dams, irrigation systems, and subsidized fertilizers, it is now time to focus on strengthening coastal regions with appropriate infrastructure and services. Local governments are being encouraged to complement the KNMP developments with additional programs aimed at revitalizing surrounding fishing settlements. The assets created through the KNMP will be managed by village administrations, supported by businesses participating in the Red and White Village Cooperatives program. This approach seeks to ensure that the benefits of the initiative reach directly to the communities it serves, fostering local ownership and participation in the development process. The KNMP program is part of a larger strategy to harness Indonesia’s vast maritime potential, including initiatives such as mapping the blue economy and promoting aquaculture.
