Indonesia charges two Chinese nationals over illegal gold mining

Indonesia's Forestry Ministry has identified two Chinese nationals, CXY and XXL, as suspects in an illegal gold mining operation in the Sungai Ongkag Limited Production Forest in Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi. The suspects were named on August 28, 2026, following an investigation that revealed their roles in the illegal mining activities. CXY was alleged to coordinate the operation, while XXL acted as a field supervisor. Digital forensics traced financial transactions linked to CXY, which were used to pay workers, rent equipment, and purchase materials for gold processing. The case originated from a forest security operation conducted by Forest Management Units I on July 10, 2026, during which officers discovered gold-processing pools and mining equipment. CXY was detained after failing to provide valid permits, and XXL was later detained on July 18, 2026. Both suspects face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of 7.5 billion rupiah. The ministry emphasized the need to protect forests, prevent environmental damage, and ensure fair resource management.
