Indian workers in Israel have demanded accountability after the murder of an Indian caregiver, Rajeev Acharya, who was stabbed to death by an Israeli national. As a result, the Israeli Builders Association urged the government to recruit between 50,000 and 90,000 workers from India. High unemployment and low wages in India have driven many workers to seek employment abroad, with Israel becoming a popular destination. However, tensions have risen as Indian trade unions have criticized the government for facilitating the migration of workers to Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In 2024, these unions called for a halt to the flow of Indian laborers to Israel, fearing complicity in the humanitarian crisis affecting Palestinians. As of August 2025, over 20,000 Indian workers had already arrived in Israel since the start of the genocide in Gaza. New agreements signed in February 2026 project that up to 100,000 Indian laborers could arrive in Israel by 2028.
