India extends grant support to Maldives for fitness centres across 42 islands

India and the Maldives have signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to expand bilateral development cooperation by providing equipment support for fitness and recreation centers on 42 islands. The agreement was signed by Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian, and Maldives' Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Minister Abdulla Rafiu during a ceremony in Male. The initiative aims to improve access to fitness facilities, particularly for women, girls, and youth, and promote healthier lifestyles. It is part of India's High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), which has seen its budget increased to MVR 355 million ($22.9 million). The project aligns with India's broader development efforts in the Maldives, including healthcare, housing, transportation, and education.

India has extended grant support to the Maldives for the establishment of fitness centres across 42 of its islands, marking a new phase in bilateral development cooperation. The agreement was formalised through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed on Sunday, July 19, 2026, in Male, the capital of the Maldives. These MoUs were inked by Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam, Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian, and Maldives’ Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Minister Abdulla Rafiu during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Male. The initiative aims to improve access to fitness and recreational facilities in remote island communities, with particular emphasis on women, girls, and young people. It is designed to promote healthier lifestyles and enhance overall community well-being. According to the Maldives’ Foreign Ministry, the project falls under India’s High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), which has received increased funding over the years. The total budget allocated for this programme has reached MVR 355 million, equivalent to approximately $22.9 million. The HICDP was launched in 2019 and focuses on community-driven development projects carried out by local councils and institutions throughout the Maldives. To date, 56 such projects have been approved under the scheme, with 24 already completed and officially inaugurated. This latest agreement adds to India’s long-standing role as a key development partner for the Maldives, having supported numerous projects in areas including healthcare, housing, transportation, education, and infrastructure. Notable Indian-assisted projects in the Maldives include the Greater Male Connectivity Project, which aims to improve road networks and reduce traffic congestion in the capital, the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital, a state-of-the-art medical facility providing advanced healthcare services, and the National College for Police and Law Enforcement, which trains personnel for public safety roles. Other major contributions involve water and sanitation improvements, airport redevelopment efforts, and the construction of 4,000 social housing units to address residential needs in urban areas. During the signing ceremony, Maldivian Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam highlighted the significance of the new initiative, calling it a “meaningful investment in the health and well-being of island communities.” She expressed gratitude towards the Government of India, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, for their sustained support in reinforcing diplomatic and developmental ties between the two nations. The collaboration reflects broader strategic engagement between India and the Maldives, rooted in shared regional interests and mutual economic benefits. Both countries have consistently worked to strengthen their bilateral relationship through joint ventures in infrastructure, security, and cultural exchanges. The recent expansion of the HICDP underscores India’s commitment to fostering sustainable development in the Maldives, aligning with its broader foreign policy goals in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region. As the project moves forward, officials from both nations are expected to coordinate closely to ensure the timely implementation of the fitness centre initiative. Local authorities in the Maldives will play a crucial role in managing the distribution of resources and overseeing the construction process. With the completion of these facilities, residents across 42 islands are anticipated to gain improved access to physical activity opportunities, potentially leading to long-term public health benefits. The agreement also signals a continuation of India’s growing influence in the Maldives, where it has increasingly positioned itself as a preferred partner for development and security-related projects. With the ongoing success of previous collaborations, the new fitness centre initiative is likely to further solidify the existing partnership between the two nations.
