India achieves milestone with launch of first private-sector orbital rocket

India has achieved a significant milestone by successfully launching its first privately developed orbital rocket, Vikram-1, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The rocket placed customer payloads into a 450km low-Earth orbit, making India the third country to achieve orbital launch capability through private enterprise. Developed by Skyroot Aerospace, a startup founded in 2018, the rocket carries a payload capacity of up to 350kg and includes experimental equipment, a lab-grown diamond, and a miniature gold sculpture commemorating India's space program. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the launch, emphasizing its potential to inspire young people to pursue innovation. This success follows previous achievements such as launching 104 satellites in 2017 and achieving a lunar landing with Chandrayaan-3 in 2023.
