The actor was found dead at his Mumbai residence in Bandra on June 14, 2020. Initially, the Mumbai Police registered an accidental death case, but the situation changed dramatically when Rajput’s father, K K Singh, filed an FIR in Patna against Rhea Chakraborty, Rajput’s former girlfriend, and others, alleging abetment to suicide, financial wrongdoing, and harassment. This led to a legal and political controversy regarding the jurisdiction of the investigation. As a result, the CBI took over the case in August 2020. Under Prasad’s leadership, the CBI conducted a thorough investigation spanning nearly five years. This included examining witness statements, scrutinizing medical and forensic evidence, and investigating allegations of murder, abetment to suicide, and other potential criminal activities. The case attracted widespread public and media scrutiny, with numerous theories circulating online and on television, including claims of poisoning and strangulation. In March 2025, the CBI submitted closure reports to courts in Mumbai and Patna, stating that their investigation found no evidence of foul play, abetment to suicide, or criminal conspiracy in Rajput’s death. These findings were later confirmed by the court, bringing a definitive end to the case. Throughout her career, Prasad has held several notable positions. She was the first Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Shahdara district, where she implemented measures to combat drug networks and gambling operations. She also played a crucial role in ensuring security for major events such as Delhi University elections and the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. Additionally, she spearheaded community-focused initiatives, including women’s self-defense training, hygiene campaigns, and youth skill-development programs. Outside Delhi, Prasad has managed security arrangements during critical events, such as the 2011 Assembly elections in West Bengal and the Ganga Sagar Mela. As Superintendent of Police in Arunachal Pradesh, she worked to restore inter-tribal harmony and dismantle extortion rings. Her efforts have consistently focused on improving public safety and fostering trust between law enforcement and communities. During her tenure with the CBI, Prasad oversaw significant cases, including the AgustaWestland investigation and the Sushant Singh Rajput probe. She also contributed to the development of the CBI Crime Manual 2020 and the agency’s Vision Document. She was instrumental in preparing for international conferences such as the Interpol General Assembly 2022 and the G20 Cyber Conference. Upon returning to the Delhi Police, Prasad introduced the MyKase software, aimed at streamlining trial management processes. Her introduction of innovative tools reflects her ongoing dedication to modernizing policing practices and enhancing efficiency in criminal investigations.
