Improving urban flood forecasting with real-time hazardous rainfall detection

The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT) has implemented its early detection technology for quasi-stationary linear rainbands and sudden localized torrential rainfall into the Urban Flood Forecasting Platform managed by the Han River Flood Control Office in South Korea. This technology aims to improve urban flood forecasting by analyzing weather radar data to detect and predict hazardous rainfall patterns that could lead to flooding. The system helps identify risks in real time, allowing authorities to make quicker decisions and respond more effectively to potential urban flooding. Since November 2025, KICT has been working with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment on developing the platform, with pilot programs underway in areas like Gangnam and Kwanak in Seoul. Dr. Yoon Seong-Sim of KICT highlighted the significance of this advancement in applying hydrometeorological technology to urban water disaster management.
