The Rhine River has reached its lowest levels in 50 years due to prolonged drought and high temperatures, marking a historic crisis for one of Europe’s most vital waterways. Along the Rhine, 22 different points measure water levels using a mix of methods, including hydrological poles, floating markers, and radar devices, though these readings differ from actual depth measurements taken at the river’s center using sonar. At Düsseldorf, the latest reading was 12 centimeters, far below the previous low of 23 centimeters recorded in October 2018. While isolated rain showers might temporarily raise water levels, they are unlikely to restore normal conditions. Despite these challenges, some temporary relief has been observed. On Sunday, the Rhine’s level at Düsseldorf rose by three centimeters following light rainfall. However, even minor increases do not guarantee safe passage for large vessels. Ships must maintain a minimum depth of water beneath their keels, which means that lower water levels require reducing cargo loads. This leads to more frequent trips with smaller loads, affecting both efficiency and profitability for transport companies. To offset these losses, operators have introduced additional fees during periods of low water, while others have opted for alternative routes or specialized vessels designed for shallow waters, such as the Stolt Ludwigshafen. The implications extend to industries dependent on the Rhine for transporting heavy goods. Companies like Thyssenkrupp Steel in Duisburg face higher transportation costs per tonne as fewer ships can carry the same volume of materials. Similarly, Siemens Energy in Mülheim an der Ruhr produces massive gas turbines weighing up to 500 tonnes, which cannot be transported by road or rail. As a result, continued reliance on the Rhine becomes increasingly critical, though prolonged dry spells could further strain logistics networks. Meanwhile, the effects of the drought are also being felt in northern Italy, where lakes and rivers are shrinking dramatically. The Lake Maggiore, shared between Italy and Switzerland, has dropped to historically low levels, exposing vast stretches of previously submerged land. Local authorities report that the lake’s water level has fallen close to its lowest recorded levels since the 1970s. Environmental researchers warn that rising temperatures and lack of spring rains have contributed significantly to this decline. With less water, there is also less oxygen available, threatening aquatic ecosystems and potentially impacting downstream rivers like the Po, which receives a substantial portion of its flow from the Maggiore. In the Alpine regions, farmers are struggling as pastures dry up, leaving livestock without adequate food or water. Some herders report that their animals are showing signs of dehydration and malnutrition, forcing them to seek alternative feeding strategies. These challenges highlight the broader environmental and economic toll of the current climate crisis, underscoring the need for coordinated efforts to manage water resources and adapt to changing weather patterns.
