Ifugao farmers urged to follow irrigation schedule

The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) has directed irrigators' associations in Ifugao to adhere strictly to the water rationing schedule and approved cropping calendar under the Hapid Irrigation System (HIS). This directive aims to guarantee fair access to irrigation water during an ongoing dry spell. The advisory was issued at the beginning of the wet cropping season, which started last week. Compliance with the schedule is emphasized to enhance water efficiency, minimize pest and disease outbreaks, foster collaboration among farmers, and allow adequate time for the upkeep of irrigation infrastructure. The Hapid Irrigation System is projected to benefit approximately 1,817.42 hectares of agricultural land during the wet cropping season. This includes 1,404 hectares dedicated to rice cultivation, 396 hectares allocated for corn farming, and 15 hectares used for fishponds. The system's implementation is crucial for sustaining agricultural productivity amidst challenging climatic conditions. The NIA highlighted areas such as Sitio Compra, Barangay Pugol, and Barangay Mabatobato, where around 126 hectares of farmland are at risk due to insufficient water supply. These regions face difficulties attributed to the persistent impact of the El Niño phenomenon and the absence of rainfall. To optimize the utilization of available water resources, the NIA initiated the opening of irrigation intake gates two days prior to the scheduled water release on July 16. This action facilitated the clearing of canals and the removal of accumulated silt and debris, thereby enhancing water flow within the irrigation network. Such efforts are part of broader initiatives aimed at improving the functionality of irrigation systems and ensuring consistent water delivery to farmers. The current water rationing plan supports essential agricultural activities such as land soaking, land preparation, and transplanting until August. Regular irrigation operations are anticipated to recommence by the end of August and extend into September and October, contingent upon favorable weather conditions. The NIA has committed to executing proactive water management strategies to counteract the adverse effects of dry conditions and uphold equitable water distribution. These strategies encompass educational campaigns, rotational water allocation methods, and routine monitoring procedures. By promoting informed practices and structured resource management, the NIA seeks to bolster resilience against environmental challenges. Farmers are encouraged to align their activities with the established schedule to maintain operational continuity and safeguard crop yields. As the dry spell persists, adherence to these guidelines becomes increasingly vital for sustaining agricultural output and mitigating potential losses.
