Identity service provider Verimi to cease operations at year-end

A German identity service provider, Verimi, has announced its decision to cease operations by the end of 2026. The company, based in Berlin, stated that its shareholders have resolved to wind down the business by December 31, 2026. According to Verimi, the firm has been operating profitably since reaching breakeven in 2024. It currently employs approximately 80 staff members in Berlin and has operated successfully over recent years. The decision follows changes in strategic conditions, according to the company. The company cited several factors influencing this move, including the revised eIDAS regulation, which introduces the European Union Digital Identity Wallet. In Germany, implementation of the EUDI-Wallet will be managed by the state agency for spring innovation, Sprind. Additionally, new regulatory requirements such as the European Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (AMLR) were mentioned as contributing reasons. Against this backdrop, the shareholders reassessed the company's prospects within the market for digital identities. Launched in 2018 as a joint venture among several major German corporations, Verimi was one of the early providers of a digital identity wallet in Germany. Users could store personal data, such as information from their ID cards, and use them to authenticate themselves online with banks, insurance companies, or mobility services. Over the years, the company expanded its offerings to include identification processes, digital signatures, and identity solutions for corporate clients. Verimi played a key role in the healthcare sector as well. Together with T-Systems, the company developed the HealthID for multiple statutory health insurance funds. In 2024, the consortium received a contract from AOK. Previously, the company had secured an order from Barmer. Verimi confirmed that all existing services will continue unchanged until the end of 2026. "This decision was not made lightly," said board chairman Stefan Imme. Given the new strategic framework, however, he described it as the correct step. At the same time, he praised the team that had made Verimi a pioneer in digital identities in Germany over the past eight years. The company faced criticism in the past due to security issues. However, it maintained profitability throughout its operation. Despite these challenges, Verimi had established itself as a leading player in the digital identity space before announcing its exit strategy. The decision comes amid evolving regulations and increasing competition in the digital identity market. As the EUDI-Wallet becomes more prominent, companies like Verimi must adapt to new compliance standards and shifting consumer expectations. This transition period presents both opportunities and challenges for firms operating in this space. Verimi’s departure marks a significant shift in the landscape of digital identity services in Germany. While the company will continue providing its current range of services through 2026, its eventual closure reflects broader industry trends toward consolidation and adaptation to stricter regulatory environments.
