In Dunedin, fog severely disrupted air travel, leading to the cancellation of at least one flight. Air New Zealand flight 5756, scheduled to depart for Christchurch shortly after 6 am, was among those affected. Travelers were advised to confirm their flight status directly with their respective airlines before heading to the airport. Additionally, icy conditions triggered a multi-vehicle crash on the Dunedin Southern Motorway, resulting in the closure of part of State Highway 1. Another stretch of State Highway 8, located between Lake Tekapo and Omarama, was also closed due to black ice, forcing local authorities to warn residents to avoid the area or delay travel plans.

Southern District Police issued a statement highlighting the increased risk of accidents due to the icy conditions. They emphasized the need for drivers to remain vigilant, particularly in areas known for frequent crashes, such as Roxburgh, Lumsden, and Cromwell. The police recommended that drivers reduce speed, maintain a safe distance, and ensure they are well-rested and sober before operating a vehicle. Meanwhile, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed that roading crews were actively applying grit to improve traction on affected roads. However, they cautioned that roads would only be reopened once deemed safe by officials. In the Queenstown-Lakes district, freezing fog contributed to damp and icy road surfaces, prompting local councils to apply additional measures to mitigate the risks posed by the harsh winter conditions.

The recent cold snap contrasts sharply with earlier climate trends, as the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research reported that June was unusually warm across much of New Zealand. Many regions experienced temperatures significantly higher than historical averages, with places like Christchurch, Nelson, and the Bay of Plenty recording some of their warmest Junes on record. This sudden shift in weather patterns highlights the unpredictable nature of climate conditions and underscores the importance of preparedness for rapid changes in temperature and road safety.
