IBM brings the mainframe to the rack

IBM has expanded its z17 mainframe platform by introducing more compact hardware variants and enhancing software offerings for AI, security, and system management. New additions include the single-frame system z17 ME2 and the rack-mount bundle z17 MER, designed for customers with limited space in data centers. These systems will be available starting August 12, 2026. The updates also feature new network options, such as a 100-gigabit Ethernet adapter and 1-gigabit network adapters, along with enhanced Data Processing Unit (DPU) functions to reduce workload on main processors. IBM is also expanding AI capabilities with tools like the AI Toolkit for IBM Z and LinuxONE, supporting models such as BERT for semantic tasks. Additional enhancements include improved data analytics features and a consumption-based pricing model for zIIP capacity.
