'I never saw it until now': Businessman's sister devastated as CCTV footage reveals his final moments

A shocking revelation unfolded in the Durban Regional Court as CCTV footage of the fatal shooting of businessman Sunil Brijmohan was presented during the trial of four suspects. The video, which had previously remained unseen by the victim’s family, brought forth a harrowing glimpse into the final moments of the 46-year-old man. Brijmohan was shot and killed outside a building site in Amanzimtoti on October 21, 2022. The footage, obtained through digital forensics efforts by Colonel Nkosiyabo Tyesi, was played during the testimony of a state witness. Tyesi, working within the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), explained that he was tasked with extracting the footage from a residence in Amanzimtoti. After analyzing the material, he provided it to the investigating officer, who used it in the ongoing legal proceedings. The video shows Brijmohan arriving at the building site at 7:23 am. He exits his vehicle and walks toward the entrance. At 7:52 am, he is seen returning to the road, accompanied by another individual in the vehicle he had arrived in. The footage captures Brijmohan walking back toward the site when two men approach him. Moments later, he collapses to the ground, and the two men walk away in the direction from which they came. At 8:00 am, Brijmohan’s vehicle returns to the scene. During cross-examination, the court will soon turn its focus to the accused. Four men, Vikash “Brian” Sewnath, Vernon Chetty, Farah Moosa, and Sibusiso Ngcobo, are facing charges of murder and have pleaded not guilty. Meanwhile, Mkhize and Al-Barakh Jaleel Van Rooyen, who were also arrested and charged, have admitted guilt and received sentences of 18 years in prison. They served as witnesses for the prosecution, represented by advocate Nhlanhla Shange. The emotional impact of the footage was evident among Brijmohan’s family. His sister, Natisha, spoke publicly after the court session, describing how watching the video shattered her world. She revealed that while the footage had circulated online, she had never viewed it until now. “There are no words to fully capture the agonizing pain of seeing my brother walking, breathing and living just minutes before his life was brutally stolen from him,” she said. Natisha described the moment Brijmohan fell to the ground as an image permanently etched into her memory. “In that single second, my family’s life changed forever. The grief I feel is not just emotional; it is deeply physical.” She added that the pain felt like a heavy, suffocating weight in her chest, making it difficult to breathe. Her anguish was compounded by the sight of the other four individuals involved in the incident. As the trial progresses, the court is expected to begin cross-examination of the accused. The case continues to unfold, with the fate of the remaining defendants yet to be determined. The courtroom has become a stage where the past is being revisited, and the lives of those involved remain intertwined with the unfolding narrative of justice.
