Hyderabad student missing in Finland found dead in Helsinki sea, family seeks probe

The body of Manideep Reddy, an 18-year-old student from Hyderabad, has been recovered from the sea in Helsinki, Finland, nearly two months after he went missing. According to information shared by the Indian Embassy in Finland with his family, the body was found in the waters near Helsinki. The family’s lawyer, KLB Kumar, stated that the embassy informed them via email on Friday after Finnish authorities confirmed the discovery. Manideep, who was studying for a Bachelor’s degree in Software and Systems Engineering at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT University), Lahti Campus, had been living in Lahti. His last known sighting was at a mall in Helsinki on May 5. Kumar expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding Manideep’s death, describing it as suspicious. He accused the Finnish government of deliberately concealing key information and presenting the incident as a natural death. The family believes that something may have happened to Manideep on the day he vanished and remains in emotional distress over the lack of clear answers. Kumar called for a thorough investigation into the events leading to his disappearance and subsequent death. He also urged the Central government to permit the parents to travel to Finland to identify the body and gather more information about the case. Communication between the family and Finnish authorities reportedly stalled after May 29. Kumar noted that initial contact with the police was limited, with only brief updates provided. However, following this date, all attempts by the family to obtain further information were met with silence. On June 19, Manideep’s father, Gujja Muthyam Reddy, revealed that a friend of his son from Delhi had filed a formal complaint with the Finnish police at the family’s request. Despite multiple communications, emails, phone calls, and persistent inquiries, the family received no response from the authorities after May 29. This led to a complete breakdown in communication, leaving the family in the dark regarding the status of the investigation. The case has shifted from a missing persons inquiry to a post-mortem examination, with the family demanding transparency and accountability. Kumar emphasized that the Finnish authorities are responsible for investigating the exact circumstances of Manideep’s disappearance and the cause of his death. He stressed that the family feels the situation was mishandled and that the authorities failed to provide adequate support or information throughout the process.
