Hyderabad doctors save woman with rare giant uterine fibroid complication

A 41-year-old woman from Bhubaneswar was successfully treated for a rare and life-threatening condition involving a giant uterine fibroid at Citizens Specialty Hospital in Hyderabad. The patient was admitted with severe abdominal pain and was found to be severely anaemic. Imaging tests revealed a 19-centimetre fibroid and uterine torsion, a rare condition in which the uterus twists on its supporting ligaments. This led to an emergency surgical intervention. The surgery, conducted by Dr. Jyoti Kankanala, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Citizens Specialty Hospital, included a hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and an appendectomy. The operation was further complicated by internal bleeding and distorted anatomical structures. To manage the situation, the patient received three units of packed red blood cells during the procedure. She recovered well and was discharged in stable condition after the surgery. Dr. Kankanala worked alongside a team of surgeons including Pratap Varma, Vani, and anaesthetist Madhukar Goud. Their coordinated efforts were crucial in managing the complex case.
