Eggs take off for the movies

A long-awaited cinematic journey has begun for the beloved animated characters of Huevocartoon, as the studio announces plans to bring its iconic universe to the big screen in 2028. Nearly two decades after the debut of the web series Huevitos en el espacio, a precursor to the broader Huevo franchise, the studio will expand its reach with a feature-length film. The announcement was made by director Rodolfo Riva Palacio Alatriste, who described the project as “psycodelic, crazy, and modern.” The new movie will continue the legacy of the original series, which featured characters such as Captain Hurk, First Officer Sir Huok, Doctor Huevo, and Sergeant Kie Hue Bota aboard the powerful spaceship Egg Enterprise. These characters explored space in short episodes that were popular among fans. The Huevo franchise began in 2006 with the release of Una película de huevos, marking the start of a successful animation series that would eventually evolve into a multi-platform media empire. Over the years, the brand expanded through various formats, including web series, shorts, and even live-action adaptations. However, the transition to theatrical releases has been limited. The last Huevo-themed film to hit cinemas was Un gallo con muchos huevos in 2009, which was well-received but did not achieve the same level of sustained popularity as earlier entries. In recent years, the production company has adapted to changing viewer habits by releasing newer installments directly to streaming platforms. Two recent films, Un rescate de huevitos and Huevitos congelados, were released online due to the impact of the pandemic and declining cinema attendance. Despite this shift, the studio reports that these films have consistently ranked among the top-grossing titles of their respective years, averaging around three million ticket sales each. This success has fueled renewed interest in returning to traditional theatrical distribution. Riva Palacio explained that while there had been discussions about creating a film centered around Confi, the Easter egg character, the decision was ultimately postponed. Instead, he outlined a new strategy: first, a sequel titled Un gallo con muchos huevos 2, followed by a film featuring Confi. He noted that the public’s memory of older films, such as Un gallo con muchos huevos, had faded, making it necessary to reintroduce the characters in a fresh context before tackling more niche stories. Meanwhile, the studio is already preparing for immediate action. On Thursday, Huevocartoon will launch a new animated film titled Gungo y los juegos cavernícolas, co-produced with Spain. This marks another step in the studio’s ongoing efforts to maintain relevance in both local and international markets. The upcoming theatrical release in 2028 is expected to serve as a major milestone, bringing together elements of past successes with contemporary storytelling techniques. As the industry continues to evolve, the Huevo franchise stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of classic animation. With plans for a new cinematic adventure set to unfold in just over two years, fans can look forward to seeing their favorite characters return to the spotlight in a format that once defined their early days.
