How Israel uses settler-soldier terror to colonise the West Bank

Israeli forces and settlers have intensified violence in the West Bank, escalating tensions with Palestinian communities through coordinated military operations and settler incursions. In recent days, the region has witnessed a surge in attacks, including the burning of homes and places of worship, violent assaults on villages, and the forced displacement of families armed with nothing more than what they could carry. These incidents follow a deadly clash in the village of Tal, located in the northern West Bank, where Israeli settlers clashed with Palestinian men, resulting in the deaths of two settlers. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded by pledging to escalate military operations in the West Bank, targeting areas he describes as “terrorist hotbeds.” Meanwhile, Defence Minister Israel Katz has emphasized the strategic importance of expanding Israeli outposts and settlements in the territory. Israeli officials frame these actions as reactive measures, yet analysts argue they represent a deliberate strategy aimed at colonizing the West Bank. This approach, according to reports, blurs the lines between military action and civilian settlement expansion, creating a system where both entities work in tandem to suppress Palestinian resistance. The pattern of violence follows a distinct sequence. Initially, Israeli military units conduct sweeping operations, often involving the destruction of infrastructure, detention, and sometimes the killing of Palestinians. These operations weaken local communities and create an environment conducive to further aggression. Subsequently, Israeli settlers intensify their incursions into Palestinian territories, often accompanied by acts of vandalism and intimidation. Finally, the Israeli government’s administrative machinery moves in to formalize territorial changes, effectively consolidating control over newly seized lands. This process was evident in the case of Jenin, where Israeli military offensives, including the 2025 operation known as “Operation Iron Wall,” devastated the city and its surrounding refugee camps. Following these attacks, settlers began establishing new outposts nearby, and additional settlements were constructed in Tulkarem. The Israeli government and security services not only protect settlers but also rely on them to advance the occupation. Over the years, settlers have played a key role in shielding individuals who commit abuses against Palestinians, including torture, rape, and murder, often leading to acquittals due to political influence and lobbying. Reporting on such incidents as “settler violence” fails to capture the broader context of a calculated strategy of colonization. This framing implies isolated acts of lawlessness rather than a systematic effort to occupy and control land that Israel considers illegitimate. The reality is far more complex, with settlers acting as both aggressors and enforcers of Israeli policy, ensuring compliance with the occupation's goals. Over the past decade, the situation in the West Bank has worsened significantly. Settlement expansion has reached unprecedented levels, with land being increasingly confiscated from Palestinian residents. Olive harvests have been disrupted, outposts expanded, and the frequency of Israeli violence has risen sharply. As a result, Palestinians face a growing sense of insecurity, living under conditions that threaten their basic rights and safety. Daily life for many Palestinians is marked by stories of displacement, torture, and humiliation. Women are forced to endure miscarriages due to prolonged exposure to checkpoints, while children miss school because of attacks on buses. Schools are frequently subjected to tear gas, and the physical space available for safe existence continues to shrink. Land is taken, and Palestinian lives are treated as tools of domination, reinforcing a cycle of oppression that shows no signs of abating. Residents of Tal, including Forouq Ramadan, have become witnesses to this ongoing crisis. Last week, Ramadan reportedly took a gun from an intruder, highlighting the increasing desperation and fear among Palestinians facing relentless aggression. The situation underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address the deepening conflict and its devastating impact on civilian populations.
