How China is rolling out electric trucks at vast scale to boost net-zero push

China is accelerating its deployment of electric trucks as part of a sweeping strategy to meet its net-zero emissions goals. According to officials, the country aims to have at least 1.6 million electric heavy-goods vehicles on the road by the end of the decade, representing a minimum of 40 per cent of new truck sales. This target was outlined by Cai Tuanjie, an official from China’s Ministry of Transport, during a recent press briefing. Currently, electric trucks constitute nearly 30 per cent of new heavy-goods vehicle sales, according to state media reports from May. The surge in demand for electric trucks has been dramatic. Sales of new-energy heavy-goods vehicles rose by 182 per cent compared to the previous year, according to Cai. This growth has continued into 2026, with sales increasing by almost 80 per cent in the first half of the year. These figures underscore the rapid pace of adoption within the transportation sector. Officials believe the shift to electric trucks will yield benefits beyond environmental gains, including strengthening the domestic electric vehicle industry and lowering logistics costs through improved efficiency. The expansion of electric truck usage is being supported by government policies designed to incentivize the transition. Under Beijing’s trade-in program, buyers of new-energy heavy-goods vehicles can receive subsidies of up to 140,000 yuan (approximately US$20,700). State media outlet Xinhua reported that these financial incentives have played a key role in driving consumer interest. Authorities are now looking to sustain and potentially expand these support measures to further accelerate the uptake of electric trucks. The move reflects a broader national commitment to decarbonizing the transport sector, which accounts for a significant portion of China’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Heavy goods vehicles, in particular, contribute heavily to air pollution and carbon output due to their reliance on diesel fuel. By replacing these vehicles with electric alternatives, China hopes to significantly cut emissions while also modernizing its infrastructure and supply chains. This transformation is also aligned with global trends toward sustainable mobility. As more countries set ambitious climate targets, China’s push for electric trucks positions it as a leader in the race to achieve net-zero emissions. The government’s focus on scaling up production and deployment aligns with its long-term vision of becoming a major player in the global electric vehicle market. Industry experts suggest that the success of the electric truck initiative depends on several factors, including the availability of charging infrastructure, the affordability of electric models, and the willingness of businesses to invest in fleet electrification.
