Scuba diver Ross McLaren, based in North Ayrshire, recently recounted his first encounter with a jellyfish, describing it as an experience filled with sheer terror. During a dive in the Clyde, one of his instructors had to pull him away from the creature’s tentacles as it drifted overhead. Though he suffered a sting on his upper lip, McLaren remained undeterred, continuing his passion for diving. He has completed nearly 600 dives since 2016 and believes jellyfish deserve more admiration than fear, calling them “one of the most mesmerising and beautiful creatures underwater.” July and August mark the peak months for jellyfish sightings in Scotland. According to Anna Bunney of the Marine Conservation Society, which conducts a national jellyfish survey, several environmental factors influence their presence. These include rising sea temperatures, increased plankton availability, especially during the warmer summer months, and prevailing ocean currents. Sea temperatures typically reach their highest levels in August and September, aligning with the period when jellyfish populations surge. This delay in warming compared to air temperatures means that the true height of jellyfish activity occurs later in the summer. Jellyfish are classified as passive drifters, relying heavily on ocean currents to move through the water. Calm summer conditions in the UK contribute to their movement toward coastal areas, resulting in higher visibility. With warmer waters, breeding rates increase, leading to large population blooms. These blooms can create dense concentrations of jellyfish in the water, sometimes resembling a thick, pulsating cloud. Such aggregations have been known to interfere with marine activities, including the operation of boats and even the functioning of industrial facilities. In 2011, the Torness nuclear power station in East Lothian had to temporarily close its intake systems after encountering a massive influx of jellyfish. A notable incident occurred earlier this month on Seafield Beach in Kirkcaldy, Fife, where a bloom of moon jellyfish washed ashore. The event highlights how frequently these creatures appear along Scotland’s shores, particularly during the summer. While jellyfish are commonly observed from April to October, McLaren noted that they can still be spotted throughout the year, though they are significantly more numerous during the warmer months. Stings from Scottish jellyfish are generally not life-threatening but can cause considerable discomfort. The effectiveness of their stings depends on the species. Most jellyfish possess stinging cells, but the intensity and visibility of the reaction vary. Swimmers should be cautious of the Lion’s Mane, a species prevalent along Scotland’s coast during the summer. Its long tentacles can deliver a painful sting, although it is rarely fatal. It is worth noting that once detached, the tentacles can remain active, potentially attaching themselves to objects like boat chains and continuing to release toxins. Jellyfish play a complex role in marine ecosystems, influencing both local biodiversity and human interactions with the sea. As climate patterns shift, the frequency and distribution of jellyfish may continue to evolve, prompting ongoing research and public awareness efforts. Understanding these creatures is essential for navigating the challenges and opportunities they present in Scotland’s coastal environments.
