Niko Fotopoulos, a 30-year-old builder and electrician who gained fame as a contestant on Love Island Australia, embarked on a personal renovation project that transformed a derelict terrace in Petersham, a suburb of Sydney's inner west, into a luxurious family home. The property, located at 4 Robert Street, was originally constructed in 1888 and had been unoccupied for nearly 25 years when it came up for sale in 2023. Fotopoulos, determined to bring the historic home back to life, competed against other developers at auction and successfully acquired the property for $1.51 million. This marked his first major renovation project undertaken entirely on his own, rather than working for clients as he had done previously.

After securing the property, Fotopoulos faced a mix of nerves and excitement as he prepared to begin the extensive restoration process. The home presented significant challenges—being a two-story brick structure with no existing bathrooms or bedrooms, along with a small fibro extension that required substantial modifications. During construction, heavy rainfall delayed progress, particularly during the critical phase of pouring the slab and concrete foundation. Despite these setbacks, Fotopoulos pressed forward, carefully planning each step of the renovation.

One of the most notable aspects of the project was the strategic decision to preserve certain elements of the original building while introducing modern design elements. He retained the front facade, focusing on restoring its Victorian-era charm with intricate detailing such as wrought ironwork and ornate cornices. Inside, he maintained a traditional aesthetic in the first room, emphasizing high skirtings and large cornices, before transitioning into a contemporary style that included curved walls and high-end finishes. These design choices reflected both his personal taste and the input of friends, family, and professionals such as an architect and stylist.

The final result of Fotopoulos' efforts is a striking blend of old and new. The renovated home features four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with two of the bedrooms boasting private en-suite bathrooms. Upstairs, the layout includes a spacious open-plan kitchen and living area, complemented by a butler’s pantry and a fireplace. Downstairs, the space extends to a beautifully landscaped backyard equipped with a plunge pool, an entertainment area, and a multipurpose studio. One standout feature is a curved wall designed by Blueprint Designs, which serves both as an architectural highlight and a practical solution for adding an additional bedroom without violating local council regulations.

Throughout the renovation, Fotopoulos made several bold decisions, including the use of Calacatta Viola marble, which runs throughout the interior spaces. This choice was a collaborative effort involving his close friends and family members, symbolizing a shared vision for the home. Additionally, he restored the original year of construction, 1888, to the exterior façade, reinforcing the historical significance of the property.

Despite exceeding his initial budget due to the high-end finishes and custom features, Fotopoulos expressed satisfaction with the outcome. He described the transformation as a journey from a dilapidated structure to a refined, family-friendly home capable of enduring for generations.
