Dr Karien Brink, a veterinarian with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, explained that the visibility of the dogs' work often overshadows the extensive efforts needed to keep them in top condition. “These dogs are elite athletes,” she noted. “They rely on the right nutrition, conditioning, and veterinary care to sustain the physical and mental demands of their work.” The challenges faced by K9 units are compounded by the extreme environments in which they operate. High temperatures, rugged terrain, and long distances place immense strain on the dogs, requiring rigorous training and ongoing medical oversight. Despite these obstacles, the partnership between rangers and their canine colleagues remains a cornerstone of conservation efforts in South Africa.
