Hong Kong woman gets 10 years in jail for luring victims into gang’s extortion plot

A 23-year-old woman from Hong Kong, Hau Yan-ki, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for her role in a gang-related extortion scheme. At the age of 17, she lured five victims—four men and one woman—to a secluded location in Yuen Long via social media and dating apps. The group then assaulted the victims, forced them to transfer money to accomplices, and subjected some to degrading acts including eating grass, undressing, masturbating in front of a camera, and being forced to perform oral sex. Hau claimed she mistakenly believed she was helping friends collect debts, but the jury rejected this defense. She was one of six individuals arrested in connection with a series of extortion schemes carried out by the gang in November 2020.
