A new study analyzing three parietal fragments of Homo antecessor from the Gran Dolina site in Spain reveals that their cranial vault thickness falls within the range observed in modern humans and Neanderthals, but is significantly less thick than that of Homo erectus and other early Pleistocene hominins. Using micro-computed tomography, researchers examined the three layers of the cranial bone, outer table, diploë, and inner table, and found that the diploë (spongy tissue) made up 41–50% of the total thickness, similar to Neanderthals and modern humans. However, the outer table was relatively thinner and the inner table relatively thicker compared to these groups. The findings, part of a doctoral thesis by CENIEH researcher Rafael Gallareto-Sande, provide important insights into the evolutionary position of Homo antecessor, supporting its classification as a species with a 'mosaic anatomy' that combines advanced and primitive traits.
